Da Vinci Robotic Surgery at Hospital Quirónsalud Torrevieja

Quirónsalud Torrevieja offers its patients the da Vinci Robot, an innovative minimally invasive robotic surgery system that allows various types of procedures to be performed with maximum safety and precision.

Robot-assisted surgery is one of the most advanced surgical technologies available today. It allows the surgeon to perform operations more efficiently, eliminating tremor and providing a detailed and clear view of the patient's anatomy.

This facilitates the performance of complex procedures, allowing access to the smallest areas of the body, equalling and even surpassing the results of conventional surgery.

I. What is the Da Vinci Robot: Components of the Robotic System

The Da Vinci Robot is a system consisting of 3 components: a console that the surgeon uses to control the surgical instruments, a viewing tower with high-definition cameras that provide a three-dimensional view of the surgical area, and a series of robotic arms that hold the surgical instruments (Endo Wrist) and manipulate them with precision.

The Da Vinci Robot is designed to perform a wide range of surgical procedures with precision and control.

II. How long does surgery with the Da Vinci take?

Interventions performed with the Da Vinci Robot generally have a similar duration to open surgeries, but with significantly higher levels of safety and precision.

The average duration varies between two and three hours, depending on the type of surgical procedure performed.

III. Benefits of Da Vinci Robot over conventional surgery

Advantages for the patient:

Some of the patient benefits of this system include:

- reduced incisions and less involvement of the muscle walls and other tissues surrounding the surgical site.

- less blood loss, and therefore less need for transfusions.

- less postoperative pain.

- Faster recovery for patients compared to traditional open surgery.

- more precise removal of tumour tissue.

- in prostate surgery, it facilitates faster recovery of sexual function and increases the chances of maintaining urinary continence.

- lower risk of complications.

- Lower risk of surgical infections.

- shorter hospitalisation period.

- Faster recovery with earlier return to daily activities.

- reduced need for reoperation.

Clinical benefits:

The advantages for the surgeon are:

- improved visualisation: The image of the surgical site becomes sharper and clearer.

- High-resolution three-dimensional vision: The use of the Da Vinci Robot allows the surgeon to visualise in three dimensions instead of the two dimensions of laparoscopic surgery.

- increased precision: The robot eliminates natural tremor and provides the ability to maximise the accuracy of the surgeon's movements.

- wide range of motion: Facilitates surgical techniques by allowing turns that would be impossible for the human hand.

- interventions in hard-to-reach areas: Robotic surgery makes it possible to approach difficult-to-reach anatomical areas with greater precision.

IV. Da Vinci Robot surgery: When is robotic surgery recommended? Why is it performed?

Some of the circumstances in which robotic surgery is often recommended include:

1. Complex procedures: When conventional surgery may be more challenging due to patient anatomy or the complex nature of the procedure, robotic surgery may offer a more precise and less invasive solution.

2. Oncology: In oncological surgeries, robotic surgery can allow a more precise removal of tumour tissue (colorectal cancer...), which is crucial for the effectiveness of the treatment and the preservation of surrounding healthy tissue.

3. Robotic prostate surgery: In procedures such as prostatectomy (prostate operationEste enlace se abrirá en una ventana nueva), robotic surgery can offer significant advantages in terms of recovery of sexual function and urinary continence due to its precision and minimal invasiveness.

Robotic prostate surgery: how is it performed?

Laparoscopic surgery for prostate cancerThis link will open in a new window, assisted by the Da Vinci robot, is a minimally invasive surgical procedure. Small incisions are made in the skin (0.5 to 1 cm in length) through which instruments are inserted to carry out the removal of the prostate.

Thanks to the high-definition camera and the high-precision system of the Da Vinci surgical robot, the surgeon can direct the instruments from the outside, thus achieving an optimal level of precision.

Some of the advantages of the Da Vinci robot prostatectomy are:

- Recovery of urinary continence with one-year continence rates of 95% for the da Vinci system and 80% for open surgery.

- Recovery of Erectile Function: Improved recovery of erectile function with robotic prostatectomy, with one-year sexual potency rates of 97% for the da Vinci system and 88% for open surgery.

- Improved control of defecatory function.

Postoperative period after robotic prostate surgery

No specific care is required after the operation. Recovery is quicker than with traditional open surgery. After being discharged from hospital, the patient can resume his or her daily life, always avoiding exertion during the first 4 weeks.

4. Gynaecological surgery: For procedures such as hysterectomy, robotic surgery may be preferable due to the ability to perform precise movements in delicate and narrow areas. In addition, other advantages of gynaecological robotic surgery include:

- Better preservation of pelvic structures (pelvic floor).

- Less sexual dysfunction.

- Greater recovery of urinary containment, recovering bladder control.

- Better sphincter control.

5. Thoracic surgery. Thoracic surgery addresses a wide range of diseases, both benign and malignant, affecting the organs and structures of the thorax.

Robotic surgery is recommended when precision, less invasiveness and faster recovery are sought. However, the decision to opt for robotic surgery should always be evaluated, considering individual needs and available treatment options.

V. Who is robotic surgery suitable for?

In principle, any patient can be treated with the Da Vinci robot. The specialist must assess each case individually to confirm whether you are a suitable candidate for this surgical approach.

VI. What kind of surgeries does the Da Vinci robot perform?

Da Vinci robotic surgery is used in a multidisciplinary way in the treatment of various pathologies, both benign and malignant (oncological):

VII. Da Vinci operation: Preparation for the operation

Da Vinci robot-assisted surgery is considered a minimally invasive technique. Nevertheless, it is imperative that the patient undergoes clinical tests and that the specialist reviews the patient's medical history to assess the patient's state of health. In addition, it is recommended that the patient should fast for several hours before the procedure.

VIII. Aftercare: Minimally Invasive Surgery

Care after Da Vinci-assisted robotic surgery may vary depending on the type of procedure performed and the specific needs of the patient.

The main advantage of Da Vinci robotic surgery is the rapid post-operative recovery compared to open surgery. Patients usually stay in hospital for 48 hours.

Some of the general guidelines that are usually applied are:

- Medical follow-up.

- Rest and recovery: It is important to rest and avoid strenuous physical activity during the recovery period.

- Pain management: Your doctor may prescribe medication to control pain after surgery.

- Incision care: Keeping incisions clean and dry can help prevent infection.

- Diet and physical activity: Your doctor may recommend a mild or specific diet for the first few days after surgery. He or she may also suggest a gradual plan to resume physical activity as the patient recovers.

- Watch for complications: It is important to watch for signs of complications such as fever, redness, excessive swelling, heavy bleeding or unusual discharge at the incision site. If you experience any of these symptoms contact your doctor immediately.
